Writing Prompt – Best Friends Online

This prompt is a fun one. It’s a lot more lighthearted than some of the others I have put up here.

Imagine two people who absolutely can’t stand each other. Maybe they have known each other for a short time, maybe for their entire lives. Whichever the case is, they do not like each other and they have no interest in that changing, ever.

Both of them are very active online. If they are school age, maybe they even use the same computer lab at school at the same time to hang out with their online best friend. If they adults, maybe they go to an internet cafe, if any such cafes still exist, or a local restaurant or coffee place that has wi-fi and frequently find themselves there at the same time, maybe trading barbs in real life while chatting with their best friend online. Their relationship is far from pleasant.

At least offline that is.

Online is a completely different situation. Online they have been friends, maybe for years. If they haven’t known each other offline their entire lives, maybe they even met online first and became friends their before meeting in real life.

They don’t know the other’s real name, because they don’t need to know that. Their friendship is beyond names. Or maybe they do know the other’s real name and hate that their best friend shares a name with their worst enemy.

What do you think will happen when they find out the truth? Or will they ever learn the truth? Will they stay friends or enemies if and when that happens?
